Recipes

Jains traditionally exclude certain foods, for example, root vegetables, onions and garlic. Based on our observations of Jain dietary choices, and by asking members of the Jain community, we concluded that some products like yoghurt cultures have been traditionally seen as acceptable, but others, like baker’s yeast, have not. In light of this, root vegetables are excluded in the recipes listed below, but we occasionally include recipes which contain fermented foods, like plant-based yoghurt and soy sauce, as ingredients. If you wish to avoid these, we suggest replacing them with alternatives – for example, lemon juice or salt and water – or else leaving them out.
